Book Review for: Sofia Khan is Not Obliged by Ayisha Malik

Sofia Khan Is not Obliged is the kind of book that you’ll want to read again and again and still never get bored. I am sitting here and I’m thinking, ‘how and why did I not read this hilarious and entertaining novel before?’ I want to thank my friends for suggesting this book to me.

If you haven’t read this book yet, PLEASE DO because you’ll LOVE IT! Especially if you’re an Asian, you’ll be able to relate with the happenings of this book SO MUCH that you’ll find yourself literally rolling on the floor and laughing. I almost did…

I love the kind of books that make you feel stronger as a woman. The kind of books that makes you more confident and sure about your life and makes you realize that you’re not alone in this weird universe. This is that kind of book. Not a lot of books that I read so far are like this.

I am also sitting here again and thinking ‘how is it really possible for some unique authors to write a book that can make you cry just as much as they can make you laugh?’

I will give this #GIRLPOWER novel a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

This story is about Sofia, who breaks up with her ‘almost husband’ because she couldn’t imagine to live with him in a home that had a ‘hole-in-the-wall’. (A house filled with crazy extended families). After her co-workers in her book publicity company hears and spreads the news about her peculiar story, Sofia’s boss assigns her to write a book on Muslim dating life.

So she gets herself signed up for to find interesting stories and ideas for her Muslim dating book but startlingly finds herself drawn towards someone she never thought she will… and that’s where the story starts.

My favorite quotes

- “You spend time worrying about the small things and then, when a big thing happens, you wish to be troubled by all those small ones if only the big thing could get better.

- “I’ve always hated words of comfort. I don’t know if you should trust a person who says ‘It’s going to be OK’ unless they’re going to personally try and fix it.”

- “Fear of rejection isn’t a sophisticated feeling. You know it thwacks you in the gut. But no matter how hard you try to look for it, you will probably never see it coming.”
